wednesday, january 26, 2005..1350 hours UTC/GMT..

it's the day after, and reactions are coming fast and furious..

the amazing sonoyta posted a blurb from newsday:

"This is, like, crazy. My mom called and said, 'I'm so proud of you. I can't believe it,"' said Portman, who won the supporting-actress Golden Globe for "Closer." "I ask, how did I get so lucky to have an amazing experience -- have a film I'm really proud of -- and then also get recognized by our own community?"

she also posted a Q&A from usatoday:

Natalie Portman (actress, Closer) called in from Israel, where she's studying at Hebrew University and in rehearsals for the film Free Zone.

Q: How did you hear this morning?

A: "Kelly (Bush, her publicist) called me, and then my mom called me."

Q: When you read the script, did you think it was Oscar material?

A: "I just thought it was a role that was really complex, and the story was really accurate and strong. And obviously the opportunity to get to spend every minute for three months with Mike Nichols means everything."

Q: Have you seen the other performances in your category?

A: "None of these movies have come out here yet — everything comes out like six months after (the U.S. release), and I'm not an academy member so I don't get the tapes. But when I was in the states, I saw Sideways, and I'm always such a huge fan of Cate Blanchett (nominated for The Aviator). And you know what? I saw Laura Linney (up for Kinsey) also. She was wonderful. I'm really, really excited to see Hotel Rwanda (up for three awards)."

Q: What are you most looking forward to about the big day?

A: "The best part of the Golden Globes was when I left the ceremony and I had like 40 messages from all the people I love in my life. All of my friends and family. People who I haven't talked to in a while. People who I know could really care less about it, but they're still proud of me no matter what."

Q: Who will you bring?

A: "My parents definitely!"

Q: Have you spoken to Clive (Owen, her co-star, also nominated) yet?

A: "I haven't, but I would love to. I don't even know where to call him or if he's awake or anything."

Q: There were four great performances in Closer. Why do you think you and Clive were singled out?

A: "I have no idea. For me, the film was such a collaboration. If one member of the team hadn't been up to the challenge, we all would have fallen. It was such a group effort that it's sort of hard to be separated because everything I did was related to what the other actors did."

Q: What was the hardest thing about this role?

A: "Because I liked all the actors so much, it was so hard to have cruel scenes, because so many of the things we did and said to each other were so cruel. It's amazing how hurtful it feels to have these things said to you."

amidoll found this blurb from bostonherald:

"I already felt so lucky to have had the best work experience of my career on `Closer,' '' Portman said in a statement. ``To receive this kind of recognition is wonderful and feels like a prize on top of a prize. It's an honor to have my name be listed in the same category with actresses I so admire.''

she also posted "Natalie's odds of winning according to Gamblers Anonymous:"

For Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Natalie Portman is the run away favorite at 3/2 odds, with Cate Blanchett at 2/1 odds.

finally, she posted variations on the same..

1. Natalie Portman

2. Paula Abdul

3. Melania Knauss

4. Leonardo di Vinci

5. Jack Johnson

finally, from bom:

A slew of Oscar hopefuls opened across the globe last weekend including Closer, Million Dollar Baby, Finding Neverland, The Aviator, Ray and Sideways.

After an impressive $7 million and counting in Italy, Closer expanded successfully into seven other markets. In the U.K., it narrowly topped Team America: World Police with a $2,990,956 premiere from 276 screens. In addition to its awards contention, the strong debut was to be expected as the picture was set and filmed in London. It was No. 1 in Germany as well with $2,308,138 from 469 screens. Both markets had theater counts that were between a limited release and a saturated release—their success indicated by healthy per screen averages. Closer was also potent in the two other German-speaking markets—Austria ( $246,161 from 44 screens) and Switzerland ($457,123 from 29).

The star-studded drama wasn't as successful in Mexico where it grossed $403,110 from a limited 120 screens. In co-star Natalie Portman's birth place Israel, Closer was also in limited release, but made $133,454 from 18 screens, and, in South Africa, it had a healthy $139,442 start from 30 screens. Overall, it grossed $6,523,700 over the weekend from 1,094 screens in 8 markets for an early $13,694,971 total.

Hey everyone, I hope you're all having a good day.

Just wondering if any of the UK peeps saw Entertainment Today this morning? They had a small Closer segment featuring both interviews with Nat and Clive. Unfortunately the Natalie interview pretty much covered all the stuff we've already heard but any Nat TV coverage is always good IMHO, especially when they say things like, "Natalie Portman is awesome, she's beautiful, absolutely amazing." The presenters from the show all gave Closer a big thumbs up and were plugging it big style so hopefully it should do semi decent once it opens wide this weekend.

I went to a preview screening last night and wasn't really expecting a big turn out considering the lack of TV advertisement thus far but it was packed, and the general consensus when the lights turned on was very positive.

first up, in my haste to update earlier [see the update at 0219 hours UTC/GMT]..i misread the new york times review..my apologies..

regarding the new Leon DVD, i think nat only comments in the 25 min documentary which can only be found on disc 2 [bonus disc]..

and **NOT** in any running commentary on disc 1, which is the movie itself..

perhaps this comprehensive review over at dvdtalk can shed more light..

excerpt:
Natalie Portman Starting Young: (13:49) The last of the documentaries on the second disc is look at Natalie Portman’s early career. Through the use of some early photographs, brand new interview footage, and even her audition tape for the role that she earned in this film, Starting Young does a good job of filling us in on how she got the role and some of the odd circumstances around her part. She talks about how her character smoked in the film, as well as some of the sexual undercurrents her character shares with Leon (or the lack thereof). While I haven’t been floored by anything that Portman has done since this film, this remains an interesting look at her first and finest film and her involvement therein.

moving along, i found definitive news on nat's new film from jpost.com..as the site requires registration, i am posting the writeup here..

excerpt:

Natalie Portman to star in Israeli film

By HANNAH BROWN

Amos Gitai will direct Natalie Portman, currently starring in Closer with Julia Roberts, in a new movie to be called The Free Zone.

Portman, 23, was born in Jerusalem but moved to the US as a child and is probably best known for her role as Queen Amidala in the Star Wars movies.

She has never worked with an Israeli director before, although for the past few months she has been studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

In addition to Portman, the cast will include Israeli actors Hanna Lazlo, Tinkerbell, Haim Abbas, Makram J. Khoury and Uri Ran Klausner, as well as Spanish actress Carmen Maura.

The Free Zone will be a comedy about three women who run an armored vehicle business in the Middle East. Principal photography will begin in February in Israel. The film will be an Israeli-French co-production.

Gitai has directed dozens of movies in Israel and France. His most recent film, Promised Land, won an award at last year's Venice Film Festival.

Variety confirms V!!

Hot off a Golden Globe nom for her work in "Closer," Natalie Portman is in final negotiations to topline the Wachowski brothers' "V Is for Vendetta," for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

An adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, action-heavy script was penned by the "Matrix" scribes. Their longtime first assistant director James McTeigue will make his helming debut on the pic. The Wachowskis will produce "Vendetta" with Warners-based Silver.

"Vendetta" takes place in an alternate future in which Germany wins WWII and Great Britain becomes a fascist state. A terrorist freedom fighter known only as "V" begins a violent guerrilla campaign to destroy those who've succumbed to totalitarianism, and recruits a young woman he's rescued -- or possibly kidnapped --from the secret police to join him.

McTeigue recently wrapped duties as first a.d.a.d. on "Star Wars -- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," where he worked closely with Portman. Actress also recently starred in the critically acclaimed "Garden State" for Fox Searchlight and Miramax.

Before "Vendetta" can start shooting in Berlin, Portman will first need to wrap up her work on "Free Zone," from Israeli helmer Amos Gitai ("11'09"01 -- September 11"). But insiders familiar with the studio's plans say the first week of March has already been carved out to start production, with a fall 2005 release planned.

Date in print: Wed., Jan. 5, 2005, Los Angeles

Padmé Naberrie aboard V For Vendetta? Posted on Mon, 3-Jan-2005 Like a fine wine, Natalie Portman only improves with age. And seems, like the vintage cheese that goes down well with it (and tastes better with age too), her film choices might be getting a little smarter too as she gets on. The Spunkster - who hadn't been as good as she was in "Garden State" since, say, "Beautiful Girls" or "Leon" - has reportedly signed on to star in the film version of Alan Moore's "V For Vendetta", according to DC-on-film.com The pic, set to be directed by James McTeigue and produced by The Wachowski Brothers, tells of a vigilante named "V", who stalks the streets of London trying to free England of its ideological chains. McTeigue was first assistant director on the first two "Star Wars" prequels, so who knows how long he and Portman have been chewing the fat about this one.

according to BOM, 'closer' managed to maintain it's 16th place from the previous weekend, and actually increased it's takings..it's domestic 'cume' is just above it's est. cost (however, marketing and distribution costs are not disclosed)..

16 16 Closer $2,300,000 35.9% 1,094 +25 $27,519,000 $27,000,000

UPDATE: this just in from nytimes.com (registration required)..

excerpt:
One problem for the studios this holiday season is that many of the small films that are generating significant Oscar buzz have yet to connect with mass audiences. Miramax's "Finding Neverland," the tale of James Barrie, the author of "Peter Pan," has generated about $24 million in eight weeks, while Sony's biting relationship film "Closer," starring Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts and Jude Law, has taken in $27 million in five weeks.

comingsoon.net has the following blurb on "Paris, je t'aime"..

excerpt
Paris, je t'aime - This will probably be an art house success that might have some crossover to a mainstream audience. Twenty directors have been selected to each shoot a five minute segment about Paris and love. A back story will link all of the segments after they are filmed. The Coen brothers have done a segment with Steve Buscemi. Jean-Luc Godard is doing a segment. And the segment done by Tom Tykwer starring Natalie Portman has screened in Germany already, and people are saying that it is one of the most beautiful things they have seen. While not for everyone, this movie will be an indie highlight of next year.

i take it that it's this year??
