Hadassah Hospital received a $50 million donation last week from a woman who was born there - famed actress Natalie Portman [..]
Portman's donation is earmarked for an improved and expanded emergency trauma center. The Hadassah Women's Zionist movement is behind the project. The expansion will enable three times as many victims to be treated at once.
At a ceremony last week at the Jerusalem Theater, Dr. Kobi Assaf, Hadassah Hospital's director of surgery and shock trauma, said the expansion of the trauma center will save many lives. "One of the most crucial things we can do for trauma patients is treat them quickly," he said. "The new unit is arranged specifically to do that; everything we need to treat them is right here."
The old center could handle 23,000 admissions a year, but demand has risen to 73,000 in recent years.
Natalie Portman, whose family name is Hershlag, was born in 1981 in Jerusalem, where her father worked as a doctor and her mother as an artist. The family left Israel for Washington when she was still very young, ultimately ending up in New York, where she lived until her graduation from high school. She graduated with honors, and her academic achievements allowed her to attend Harvard. Natalie spent last summer studying Jewish history at Hebrew University.
While studying at Harvard, Portman wrote an open letter defending Israeli security policies after a pro-PLO student attacked Israel in the campus newpaper. She frequently paid visits to Israeli victims of terrorism in hospitals during the course of the Oslo War.

Actress NATALIE PORTMAN impressed everyone on the Berlin set of her latest film V FOR VENDETTA when she started speaking fluent German.
Unlike many actors, who would be silenced by the language barrier, linguistic Portman, 23, immediately started communicating in the native language.
A source says, "She just turned up one day talking German. It has made her very popular with the Germans on the crew."
The STAR WARS actress, educated at top American university HARVARD, is fluent in Hebrew, French and Japanese, as well as German.
V For Vendetta explores how different life would be if Germany had won World War II.

George Lucas is planning to remaster all of the "Star Wars" films for rerelease in 3-D, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The director, who is releasing Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith on May 19th, said he hadn't yet committed to a precise schedule but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie in 2007 and that he would then rerelease one "Star Wars" film per year in 3-D.
Lucas and 20th Century Fox screened the first six minutes of "Revenge of the Sith" at ShoWest on Thursday and he talked more about the film.
"It's not like the first one. It's more emotional. I describe it as a 'Titanic' in space. It's a real tearjerker, and it will be received in a way that none of us can expect," he said.

here's something fashion related..apparently, the best actress in a leading category in this year's oscars had to choose from natalie portman rejects!!
So how exactly did Hilary Swank end up in that Guy Laroche dress at the Oscars? She was supposed to wear Calvin Klein, for whom she is an underwear model. A Calvin Klein rep said Hilary simply changed her mind on the day, but it seems the label has only itself to blame. "A week before the Oscars, there was no dress, only sketches," says a snitch. "She went back on the Saturday of Oscar weekend, and they gave her a dress to try on that is all pinned and not even close to being finished. "So the stylist starts to get really nervous and gives Hilary a bunch of dresses to try on that are all ones Natalie Portman decided not to wear. It was Hilary's publicist who spotted the Guy Laroche dress that she actually wore. Hilary's camp decided to give Calvin Klein until 11 on Oscar Sunday to produce the dress, but it arrived at 1 p.m. So she went with the Laroche dress."
