moving along, cal's fave site bom on the box office..excerpt.."Revenge of the Sith pulled in an estimated $55.1 million over the three-day weekend, down 49 percent from its $108.4 million opening frame. With a galactic $271.2 million after 12 days, George Lucas' digital epic already ranks as the 26th highest grossing picture of all time, it set new records for nine-day to 12-day grosses and is well ahead of predecessors Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace at the same point. However, Sith had a heftier second weekend drop than Clones' 40 percent and Phantom Menace's 21 percent. Though $400 million seems a stretch at this point, Sith should at least reach similar heights as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Spider-Man 2.."
it's pretty interesting that usa today's choice of numbers makes it's spin on ep3's b.o. more positive..
Sith remained No. 1 over the four-day weekend with $70.8 million, according to estimates from Nielsen EDI. It already has taken in $271.2 million.
That's a drop of 42% compared to the Star Wars prequel's Friday-through-Monday tally last week — a relatively small decline considering that massive debuts often are followed by an audience erosion of 50% to 60%..

first up, a report that shoots itself in the foot..
AHEAD of last night's eviction show a rumour that Nicole Kidman was set to visit the Big Brother house seemed outlandish. But after that possibility had been debunked, talk persisted that another Hollywood star is set to call in to the show's Gold Coast compound. The talk suggests there may be a shaven-headed star mingling with the housemates in the near future - one Natalie Portman. Supposedly she may pay the BB housemates a visit as part of a promotional exercise to tie in with the release of the latest Star Wars flick - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, in which she plays Padme Amidala. Taking into account her reputation as a class act though, it's unlikely the Closer star would consider associating herself with such a trashy TV concept..
aicn on ''v for vendetta''..
Yes, I read Rich Johnston’s piece earlier this week about Alan Moore’s problems with the film adaptation of the graphic novel he co-authored with David Lloyd, but I also read the script for the film, and right now, I’m intrigued. I don’t think it’s a flawless script, but I think it’s a huge improvement from the Alan Moore films we’ve seen up till now. Natalie Portman’s well-cast as Evey, the girl who becomes the sole confidant of V, a mysterious terrorist working to bring down an oppressive London government. Frankly, I’m amazed the film is getting made at all in today’s political climate, never mind seeing how much of it is actually intact. There are some key sequences that the Wachowskis got right, but some big ideas that they dropped completely. Their first time director, James McTiegue, is a big fat unknown as a feature filmmaker, which is a little scary with material this complex, and the switch from James Purefoy to Hugo Weaving as the lead mid-shoot is more than a little suspicious. Even if the film is only 1/10th as smart and caustic and hallucinatory as the original work, it’ll still be better than most films we’ll see this year..
cinematical on the box office..
No one's going to call this weekend's box office winner until tomorrow, but Saturday numbers are in, and the stats are incredibly close. Star Wars made $20.8 million yesterday, bringing it to $36.3 over two days; that's against about $32 million for Madagascar, and $33.8 for The Longest Yard. The Adam Sandler flick started out strong on Friday, but failed to pick up much business on Saturday and came in third for the day..

i felt a great disturbance in the force..
Revenge of the Sandler? George Lucas and friends made a crapload of money last weekend, but judging solely on showbizdata.com set of numbers, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith's reign at number one may have been a short one. Showbiz Data's early Friday box office estimates suggest that The Longest Yard raked in $15.7 million - about $200,000 more than Revenge of the Sith. It's a three day weekend and anything could still happen, but what does it say about the market if the biggest film of the year can't even hold on to the number one slot for more than a week??
according to rottentomatoes, sandler's film "the longest yard," "RATING: ROTTEN READING: 34%"..

'Sith' boxoffice destiny fulfilled
By Brian Fuson
The empire expanded and the Force added a few pages to the history books in the wake of Thursday's release of 20th Century Fox's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith." The film that brings to light Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader racked up $108.4 million on its debut weekend and a record-shattering $158.4 million in its first four days of release, according to Monday's final figures.
Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson star in the latest "Star Wars" epic, which was helmed and written by George Lucas and was the first in the series to carry the PG-13 rating; the other five films were rated PG. Through Sunday, the estimated worldwide boxoffice for "Sith" was a staggering $303.2 million.
The opening for the sixth and final film in the George Lucas-conceived franchise -- which, excluding "Sith," has taken in $3.4 billion at the worldwide boxoffice -- marked the second-biggest nonholiday three-day session of all time. But including Thursday's tally, it was the biggest first four days in boxoffice history.
Only Sony's "Spider-Man," with a three-day gross of $114.8 million, had a bigger opening weekend. But "Spider-Man" benefited from being released on a Friday, while "Sith" opened on a Thursday, which tends to draw away boxoffice from the weekend.
Starting at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, "Sith" scored a record $16.9 million from just the midnight shows alone (HR 5/20). It went on to collect a record-shattering $50 million on its first day of release. It was the biggest single-day gross in boxoffice history, the largest opening day in history and marked the first time that the $50 million level had been reached in a single day.
Before "Sith," DreamWorks' "Shrek 2" held the title of the biggest single day of all time with a Saturday gross of $44.8 million, followed by "Spider-Man" -- the first film to crack the $40 million single-day barrier -- with a Saturday gross of $43.6 million.
"Sith" ends where the original "Star Wars" trilogy begins. On a historical note, 1977's "Star Wars" was the first film in boxoffice history to gross more than $10 million on a single three-day weekend, which became the standard to which all films thereafter strived. So it's appropriate that "Sith" raised the single-day bar so significantly.
Executives at Fox were ecstatic about the opening of "Sith." "I had high expectations, but I don't think anybody expected $158.5 million in four days, especially presummer," said an understandably upbeat Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution at Fox. "That's beyond my highest hopes. We've set domestic boxoffice records, international boxoffice records and intergalactic boxoffice records.
"What we're seeing and hearing," he added, "is that people really love this movie -- this is George's masterpiece. Audiences are having a grand old time, and the reactions are tremendous. People are buying tickets for future shows on their way out of the auditorium."
He added that people who haven't seen a "Star Wars" movie since 1977 are coming out to theaters to see this film, and it's attracting a cross-generational audience with multiple generations seeing it together. " 'Star Wars' once again is a cultural phenomenon," Snyder said.
Thanks largely to the sensational $50 million jump-start, "Sith" is on a record pace on a cumulative daily basis, holding the record for the biggest first two days, with $83.8 million, besting "Spider-Man" ($83 million); first three days, with $124.7 million, also topping "Spider-Man"; and first four days, bettering Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Matrix Reloaded" ($134.3 million, which includes $5 million in previews). "Sith" already owns the biggest first five days of release because its four-day cume is higher than the first five days of any film ever released.
"Sith" ties "Spider-Man" and "Matrix Reloaded" as the fastest to reach the $100 million mark, as each film took three days to hit that level. But "Sith" already is the fastest to the $150 million mark and is tracking to become the fastest to the $200 million mark. Record holder "Spider-Man 2" hit $200 million in eight days; "Sith" should rocket past that tally in six or seven days.
Alone, the tremendous opening for "Sith" wasn't enough to avoid a 13th consecutive down weekend at the boxoffice as compared with last year. The estimated total for this weekend's top 12 films was $156.5 million, down 4% from the comparable weekend last year, when "Shrek 2" ($108 million) and Warner's "Troy" ($23.9 million) were in theaters. The Hollywood Reporter projects the total for all films this weekend to be in the low- to mid-$160 million range, down slightly from last year's $170.6 million.
Although the weekend proved down, because of Thursday's infusion of $50 million from "Sith," the national boxoffice for the week ending May 19 was up nearly 8% from the comparable seven-day period in 2004 ($181.5 million vs. $168.6 million). That in turn helped ease the year-to-date shortfall slightly, taking the deficit down a notch to 6% ($2.84 billion vs. $3.02 billion). Estimated admissions for the year to date are trailing last year at this time by nearly 7%.

Shaven haired Natalie Portman is so desperate to grow back her chopped-off locks - she is bathing her skull in expensive mineral water. The screen beauty, who had the skinhead cut for her latest role in forthcoming movie 'V For Vendetta', is allegedly finding the drastic new look difficult to live with, according to Britain's Sunday Express newspaper. Earlier this week, it was revealed the stunning actress was mistaken for Irish singer Sinead O'Connor after lopping off her brunette bob. A source close to the star said: "People keep thinking Natalie is Sinead. But she thinks it's hilarious and loves the comparison." Despite her shaved head, the actress sent pulses racing at the Cannes premiere of 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' when she arrived in a low-cut black dress.

'anyways,' red bull racing had star wars' livery on their f1 cars and the pit crew were dressed up like stormtroopers!!
here's a writeup..
Star Wars creator George Lucas was Red Bull Racing's guest of honour in the Monaco paddock [..]
The movie mogul brought with him some of the more famous characters from his new film 'Revenge of the Sith' which opened in cinemas across the UK on Friday.
The Red Bull team, which has a fast growing reputation for fighting above its weight both on the track and in the PR stunt department, is running its cars in Star Wars livery this weekend.
Iconic figures Chewbacca, Darth Vader, C3PO and R2-D2 were all on hand, while a squad of stormtroopers will guard the team's floating Energy Station hospitality unit throughout the weekend.
Not to be out-done the team's leading driver David Coulthard has promised the most daring stunt of all.
The Scot has vowed, that should he finish on the podium this weekend, he will pull a moonie!
"Much as I would not like to see DC's arse, a podium, if he has threatened to do that, would be the best place to see it," said team principal Christain Horner.
"As long as it has Red Bull tattooed on his buttocks..
all i can say thank goodness david coulthard retired..
back to nat shall we?? i posted an op/ed which 'sez' ''there's no excuse for Lucas to stick his actors with sluggish lines..'' including nat!!
here's an excerpt of another op/ed i posted at the aqmb..
While the release of the final instalment of the Star Wars series was never in danger of going unnoticed at the Cannes Film Festival, it was an arresting image of Portman - with her head shaved so close she could have been auditioning for another Alien movie - that really grabbed attention.
The multibillion-dollar enterprise that is the Star Wars franchise may have an equally expensive marketing machine at its disposal, but it was a simple haircut, presumably free by the stylists on the set of Portman's new project, V For Vendetta, that garnered lucrative column inches and headlines for the 23-year-old, and the Lucas epic in turn.
As publicity stunts go, it was a cheap example of the "shock and awe" theory that has become such an essential part of marketing movies today, keeping increasingly jaded audiences interested and teams of master manipulators in business.
Portman's shaved head, while controversial on such a pretty young thing, may not have been the design of Star Wars image control, but it sure hasn't hurt her image.
She can now count herself among an illustrious group of Hollywood women prepared to go ugly on film (her nicely timed shaved head was for her role as freedom fighter in V For Vendetta, which also stars Hugo Weaving and is filming in Germany).
It's a trick that turned to Oscars gold for the likes of Nicole Kidman (that nose in The Hours) and Hilary Swank (those bruises in Million Dollar Baby).
Then there's the I'm-so-beautiful-I-don't-need-girlie-locks-to-prove-it factor.
And if gossip from the Cannes premiere after-party is to be believed, her new boyfriend, Israeli actor Liron Levo, found her velvety dome such a turn-on he couldn't keep his hands off it while they got down on the dance floor...

'Sith' boxoffice commandment: It shall kill
By Nicole Sperling
The Force returns to theaters one last time this weekend, and George Lucas' six-film "Star Wars" series is set to go out with a bang and save the flagging boxoffice. With sold-out screenings nationwide at 12:01 Thursday morning and playing continuously thereafter, "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" is on track to deliver the largest four-day opening in history.
The film already has set one record with astronomical midnight numbers. "Sith" grossed $16.5 million-$17 million for its first showing in 2,900 theaters early Thursday, according to estimates from distributor 20th Century Fox. It's a staggering number; by contrast, 2002's "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" made $6.2 million during its first showing.
"Sith" is out in about 9,400 prints at 3,661 theaters and has been luring die-hard fans and avid moviegoers looking to share in a cultural phenomenon. Starring Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson, "Sith" is the darkest of the six films and the only one with a PG-13 rating. The film centers on Anakin Skywalker's (Christensen) turn to the dark side and his evolution into Darth Vader. It is opening much wider than any other "Star Wars" film and is sure to surpass the grosses of the previous iterations.
"Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," opened to $64.8 million in May 1999 on its way to $431 million. In contrast, "Clones" did not fare as well, opening in 2002 to $80 million before reaching $311 million. "Sith" has been graced by positive reviews and, as the final installment of the series, will receive the added bonus of nostalgia as moviegoers witness its conclusion.
"Sith's" opening-day numbers should exceed $40 million and could even top "Shrek 2's" single-day record of $44.8 million. The total for the four-day frame should be in the $125 million-$160 million range, with most expecting it to come in at the high end of that number. It is likely to beat "The Matrix Reloaded's" record four-day opening of $134.3 million, as well as that film's Thursday opening-day mark of $42.5 million.
moving along, sonoyta found this interesting blurb..
WASHINGTON - Speaking from the nation's capital this morning, U.S. Rep. John "Randy" Kuhl said he'll be making room to catch "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith."
Kuhl noted one of his sons went to Harvard and is a close friend of one of the film's stars, Natalie Portman.
"I have a special interest," he said. "I know Natalie. She's in a movie that my son produced that hasn't quite grabbed the headlines that Star Wars III has produced."

imdb has this 'blurb' on "Portman's Pregnancy!!"
Portman's Pregnancy Made To Measure [..] Screen siren Natalie Portman was sad to turn her back on action sequences in the final Star Wars movie Episode Iii - Revenge Of The Sith, because her character Padme Amidala is pregnant with Anakin Skywalker's twins. The Garden State beauty accepted the challenge of seeing out her sci-fi role by sporting a strap-on bump to simulate Padme's different stages of pregnancy. Despite her regret at having to take a more pedestrian role, Portman is aware action sequences featuring a pregnant woman would have upset lots of viewers. The 23-year-old tells Empire magazine, "There's definitely a lot less action for me. It would be kind of ridiculous to have a pregnant woman doing that. Not to mention unethical." On her prosthetic attachment, Portman adds, "There were a couple of different sizes. I think they made the bump to my measurements, but I didn't have to have, like, a cast made of my stomach. They made it for my proportions, because having a six-foot girl's bump would have looked kind of ridiculous on me."

t-minus 1 hour!! i think this really says it all!! plus there's fresh gossip too!!
Tonight's the night. At 12:01 am nerds all over America (myself included) will be getting their first glimpse at Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Many of them will have saved all their money for the plethora of Star Wars-themed products on the market. But only one person has the one thing they all really want (besides Princess Leia in a gold bikini), Natalie Portman's hair. And who is the lucky owner of her recently-shorn tresses? Not a Portman superfan who raided the trash on the movie set where the shaving took place, but Natalie herself. The actress admitted she was unable to part with her looks just yet and has them stowed away in a plastic bag. "It might seem gross but I loved my hair," she said.
so nat really loved her long hair!!
on episode III release, Cal found a fantastic writeup from variety..here's an excerpt..

early morning gossip from cannes - south of france!!
Elsewhere in the the restaurant, Christensen's co-star Natalie Portman tore up the dance floor with her new boyfriend, Israeli actor Liron Levo. Portman had shown up sporting a Sinead O'Connor-like shaved head from her role in "V for Vendetta," and Levo couldn't resist rubbing her cute cue ball over and over - for good luck perhaps?.
new boyfriend?! she brought him to the oscars which feels like ages ago!!

Natalie Portman promotes her Israeli film at Cannes - May. 17 - Natalie Portman drew attention upon her arrival at the Cannes Film Festival this week mainly for her new hairdo and for her appearance in the final Star Wars film, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith But the Jerusalem-born actress is also there to promote her first feature film in Hebrew, Free Zone, which is in the competition for the prestigious Palme D'Or award. Portman agreed to do the film, directed by Amos Gitai, during the semester she spent last year studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem following her graduation from Harvard. Portman, who was raised in New York, is the daughter of Israeli parents, and speaks fluent Hebrew. Portman told the Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot, that she approached the internationally acclaimed director after seeing his films Kadosh and Kippur. "Over the course of shooting the film, I researched and explored the infinite variety that exists in the place that I come from. And I really got to know Arab Israelis in-depth." She said, "I was happy to find that Israel has, in recent years, become a good and optimistic place to be."

Did Ewan give Natalie a head start?
SIMON PIA
NATALIE Portman’s skinhead is rather fetching, and it wasn’t just the paparazzi who were captivated by it in Cannes at the Star Wars premiere. But we couldn’t help thinking she nicked it off Ewan McGregor.
Not his barnet as Obi Wan Kenobi, but rather his Trainspotting look as Mark "Rent Boy" Renton. Despite all the kerfuffle on the Croisette, an old luvvie was complaining how it was McCrindle, not McGregor, who was the first Jock to cash in on Star Wars.
Indeed, the late Alex McCrindle did star in the first film in 1977 as General Jan Dodonna, leader of the Rebel Alliance. Unfortunately, he didn’t really cash in on it.
and here's something really hilarious from spoofnews..
Portman and DeLay Will Testify for Jackson
Monday, 16 May 2005
Actress Natalie Portman ("Closer") and House Minority Leader Tom DeLay ("Around the World on Jack Abramoff") have been added to the witness list in the Michael Jackson child molestation trial. Attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr. notified Judge Rodney S. Melville and District Attorney Thomas Sneddon Monday morning.
Portman shocked fans this weekend at the Cannes Film Festival. She showed up for the premiere for "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" sporting a new skinhead haircut.
Portman quickly reassured Europeans at her hotel that the United States had not reinstituted the draft yet. When she return to Hollywood, she will take the stand on Jackson's behalf.
"We need Natalie's testimony to move our case along," said Jackson spokesperson Raymone Bain. "Next week, all the other character witnesses will be stuck in long lines to see 'Star Wars.'" Natalie will testify that Jackson never, ever, ever laid a hand on her. Mesereau hopes the cue ball haircut will convince jurors that the Golden Globe winning actress is really a boy.
The actress is signed to play the lead in "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium." She recently visited the Neverland Ranch to research the role. Her and "MJ" became fast friends.

In EW's Star Wars article Natalie has these comments:
pg. 28- Lucas denies that his chops were rusty after 20 years. But he has admitted that the on-the-job training in digital backlot filmmaking was a steep learning curve. Ditto the actors: Natalie Portman, who plays Padme, says she underestimated the prequels' demands on her talent. "It was a lot harder than I expected," says the Closer Oscar nominee. "As an actor looking at these films, you don't really consider it might be even more challenging than a really dramatic character piece"
pg. 30- What does Natalie Portman think of George's ability to write romantic dialogue? "I'll take the Fifth on that," says Portman. "It's fun stuff to work on, but it's not Shakespeare."
pg. 30- Talk like that makes it seem as if the prequels have been more of a halfhearted liasion than a torrid affair for Lucas, and some fans have wondered if this explains why at least two of the movies have not met their high expectations. Counters Portman: "He loved these films. He loved this story. I don't think he could have devoted such a significant portion of his life to them if he didn't."

No, It Wasn't A Bad Perm
By REBECCA WINTERS
Level-headed young NATALIE PORTMAN is anticipating a range of responses to her spare new hairdo. "Some people will think I'm a neo-Nazi," the Garden State star suspects, "or that I have cancer or I'm a lesbian." We would also like to warn her of a probable "Hey, Sinéad!" faction. You see, this isn't like Britney Spears going brunet. Portman, the exotically coiffed Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, allowed her petite pate to be shaved on camera in Berlin last week, a process she describes as "really exciting." The 23-year-old's shoulder-length chestnut locks were sheared for a prison scene in this fall's futuristic drama V for Vendetta. In this next film from the makers of the Matrix trilogy, Portman plays a suspected terrorist in a totalitarian state. Days after the shoot, she says, "I can't stop rubbing my head. It's so soft, I might keep it for a while." Hmm, a hot new bald star with action-adventure experience? Somewhere Vin Diesel's agent is quietly freaking out.

Without giving anything away, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen are much better this time around. Ms. Portman is radiant as always and both of them seem much more comfortable in their roles.
In the first two films of the prequel trilogy the acting was pretty stale, save for Liam Neeson (just 1st film); and occasionally McGregor and Natalie Portman. Here, Ian McDiarmid is given more screen time, as his performance shines throughout the film. Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman are also very good, even thought traces of overacting are visible ("YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE!!!" ; anybody?). Hayden Christensen carries out a stale performance from an acting perspective, but he is convincing as a cold emotionless human hiding his insecurities under a scowl.

Well, I wish Greg's appearance would have been more prominent, but I guess that would have been hoping for too much. It's possible that a close-up of the his group having dinner was not aired, but I think this brief glimpse of Greg is all we're going to get. The important thing is, this appearance meant a lot to Greg, getting to meet one of his favorite actresses on his favorite show. :) This is the best I could do with the clip, but if anyone has a higher rez version, please post it. The video takes a while to load if you try to stream it, so it's best if you just right click and save.mpeg..

Andi sent me and other members of the AQMB the following time sensitive email..
Hello to all of you out there!
My name is Andi and I have been friend's with Greg Muskewitz since high school. It's been a very surreal experience the past week, especially being one of Greg's pall bearers, but reading all your wonderful comments about him definitely helped me through it. I've talked to Greg's mom, Diane, over the past week and she knows about Cal's thread and has seen all your wonderful comments and is touched by how many people Greg had reached. At Greg's service on Friday, I asked his mom if I could grab a bunch of extra memorial pamphlets for his online community of friends and she said of course. I was able to get about 16 extra. I know there are probably more than 16 people who want one, but if you do, please email me back with your address and I will send one off to you as soon as possible. Your emails and Cal's were the only ones I was able to get off the AQMB, so if you know anyone else who would be interested, please let them know.
Thanks so much for being a part of his life,
Andi
P.S. Don't forget to catch Greg's appearance on Gilmore Girls as a customer in Luke's diner, this Tuesday, May 3rd.
thanks Andi!! if anyone wants a copy of the memorial pamphlets, please drop me an email and i will forward your request to Andi..
here's the addendum..
I also just found out, on the trip he never got to take to Europe, they were setting it up, unknown to him, for him to meet Natalie in Berlin. I hope someone tells her about him. He'd love that. Andi
