December 13, 2005..

V for Vendetta was shown last weekend's Butt-Numb-a-Thon, in Austin, Tx. Here are two of the comments:

Nordling (from AICN)
quote:
I can't wait to see how this shatters American audiences. Alan Moore's graphic novel is adapted perfectly for the big screen and Natalie Portman knocks it out of the park with a performance of bravery and passion. Hugo Weaving was terrific as V. A damn near flawless movie that will rip audiences asunder.
Miya (from AICN)
quote:
Pleasantly surprised by this one, wasn't sure quite what to expect. Hugo Weaving, first of all, did an excellent job as V, physically committed to the role at all times, and that great voice of his really allows him to overcome the inability to use his face at all, giving a really great performance. Natalie Portman does well with the Evey role, but Stephen Fry was the standout for me as Gordon Dietrich.

According to this page, Nat's next project Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is slated to begin production March 27 in Toronto.

Also, this (very informing) blog has announced that the official shooting of Goya's Ghost came to an end yesterday, December 07 (a few days for additional shots are left).

Let the Oscar buzz begin!!!

Thanks for updating us on Goya’s Ghosts, sonoyta. The film should be finished shooting about now.

Love, Love, Love. That’s exciting news about JC getting married!! I hope the charming couple will come visit my husband and me in the USA.

We apologize for the break in updates. To atone for the absence of postings, I’ll make my first update at the new np.org packed full of Free Zone news:

Natalie’s indie film Free Zone is playing at a number of film festivals this month, so watch for it (see details below). It was scheduled for a Dec 16 limited US release, but a story in today’s Variety says it has been picked up by distributor New Yorker Films. That’s good news, except it says (unless it’s a mistake) the film won’t be released until April 7 (2006). Still listed as limited NY and then nationwide, although I doubt it will play in wide release (meaning "over 600 theaters").

Dark Horizons has a story on it, since Variety is subscription only:

quote:
“Indie distributor New Yorker Films has picked up all domestic rights to Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai's "Free Zone," starring Natalie Portman, from BAC Films Intl. Pic follows Portman as an American living in Jerusalem who meets two women -- an Israeli and a Palestinian -- and becomes a temporary traveling companion with them in a remote area of Jordan. Pic will bow April 7 through New Yorker in New York, followed by a national release..."

Regarding Free Zone, I cross-posted a few new Free Zone articles on this page at AQMB Natalie Portman Forum, where you can read excerpts and follow links.

-- SPOILERS at link -- One piece is a nice preview in the New York Times.
Unfortunately, it has BIG ending spoilers, so read the link at your own risk.

I liked this part (don't worry, no spoilers below here on the main page), as it seems like the writer is trying to understand Gitai’s intent, rather than dismissing it outright as bad filmmaking:

quote:
"Free Zone," starring the internationally known Natalie Portman, was an official selection this year at Cannes. A reticent and in many ways trying film, it provides a good example of Mr. Gitai's efforts to mix documentary techniques into a fictional form, to capture the confusions and cracked truths of the Middle East conflict in films with narrative drive. In a recent interview, he said: "How do you transfer the cacophony of the region, in which the pure arguments aren't any more coherent, into fictional work? My work is part fiction and part documentary."

A film festival called "Hard Questions: The Films of Amos Gitai" began Nov 30 and runs through Dec 8 at Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center, NYC. It features the American premiere of “Free Zone.” Call (212) 875-5600 for info.

Free Zone is also playing at the Israel Film Festival, which runs over the next two weeks in Los Angeles.

(Part two)

Natalie visited Chillida-Leku Museum on November 14th:

Natalie poses with Luís Chillida who guided her on a small tour through the museum, so she could enjoy the place and learn about the work of his father.

JC just posted at the aqmb..

ARE things back on between Gael Garcia Bernal and Natalie Portman? The hunky Mexican actor - who enjoyed a boozy night out with Sienna Miller earlier this year - was getting very close to his ex-girlfriend at a London bash. Our source reveals: "Looking at them you'd never guess that they'd split up. They were dancing very closely and canoodling like a couple - everyone in the room thought they were an item. "Gael was even overheard telling Natalie how stunning she looked." Well, she is a queen in the Star Wars movies...

November 7, 2005..

(Another admirer...) From a Gwyneth Paltrow interview for the 10th anniversary of Estée Lauder's Pleasures:

quote:
Which women in movies do you admire for their beauty, in history and today? I’ve always loved Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot, as well as Audrey Hepburn and Jane Birkin. I also think (actress) Natalie Portman and (former model) Christy Turlington are beautiful, modern women.
You can read the rest of the interview here.
