I was reading some of the reviews, and I found these interesting quotes from one of them: I'll start with the story, because this is was too much like Garden State. Parent dies, and a young man with a failed career goes to his father's childhood town to get the body, and there finds lots of weird people, and meets a young woman and falls in love with her. [..] And finally there's Kirsten Dunst's Claire, my other huge problem with the movie. The most controversial of the four is undoubtedly Free Zone. Forget everything you might have heard about the tzuris unleashed when actress Natalie Portman was seen kissing co-star Aki Avni at the Western Wall; "Free Zone" is a very serious film, both well made and exceptionally thought-provoking. "Free Zone" begins with a tight close-up on the tear-stained face of the beautiful Portman, and the camera remains there, for minutes that feel like hours. As "Rebecca," Portman’s character, cries, audience attention turns to the haunting music on the soundtrack, which sounds vaguely familiar but weirdly dissonant. It takes a while to realize the voice belongs to Chava Alberstein and she’s singing her version of Chad Gadya, originally recorded in 1989 during the first intifada: “All the nights [of Passover] I asked only four questions. This night I have another question: when will the circle of terror end? When the camera finally pulls back, we see that Rebecca is in the back seat of a tour van. Her driver is "Hanna," played by Hana Laszlo (who won an acting award for this role at last May’s Cannes Film Festival). Hanna has a mysterious errand to run and since Rebecca has nowhere else to go, Hanna reluctantly takes her along. The camera position puts you in the eyes of the friend, desperately waiting for the listener to nod with approval. But, as usual, the responses tend to be somewhere between bored and mildly enthused. An old lady looks vaguely entertained. A guy who looks like Elliott Smith nuzzles his girlfriend tenderly. Another teenaged couple makes fools of themselves for the camera. One guy just seems irritated. I guess it’s only appropriate that a Bright Eyes video would be so superficial in its emotional voyeurism. The video succeeds because it captures the only truly great line in the song: ''I’d rather be working towards a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery.'' Love and music-listening are more often about slow-burning simmers or trial-and-error processes than about revelatory moments in which the song Natalie Portman gives you actually changes your life. And it’s comforting for a video to acknowledge that, I suppose..
